Carrier (or upper) rollers present particular challenges in this process. The internal surfaces of the roller shell are machined with varying shapes to accommodate both the roller and thrust bearings, as illustrated in the diagram below.
Because of these internal variations, the use of an ultrasonic probe may lead to inconsistent or inaccurate readings. For a truly precise and dependable measurement, it is recommended to use calipers.
