Sugar Cane Harvesters need to be operational 99% of the time during harvest season. Each mill uses a fleet of at least 30 of these machines, and sometimes up to 1000 pieces of equipment including tractors and trucks.

These harvesters are complex, running on tracks and hydraulic systems. To ensure they stay available, maintenance is planned throughout the year using a consistent approach. This means machines are serviced regularly, not just during harvest season.

This is done using a methodology inspired from Formula 1 called “Linear Maintenance Methodology” the steps below show how this can be achieved:

  1. Track chains and frames are inspected twice a month
  2. 5-days before scheduled maintenance (PM) service, machines are inspected in the field.
  3. During the PM, chains and frames are removed and replaced with ones from inventory, allowing for quick machine turnaround
  4. The removed parts are then rebuilt and placed in inventory for future use or scrapped if worn out.
  5. Inspection data is reviewed at every inspection, generating instructions to the maintenance department to ensure the correct inventory is in place and correct replacements are made.
